PPE Spring Author Series: Charles Mills: Rawls and Racial Justice

March 3, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Speaker:
Charles Mills

Venue:
Zoom (Registration required below.)

Event Description:
John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice is widely regarded as one of the most significant and influential works of political philosophy from the 20th century. In this work, Rawls develops a comprehensive theory of justice. But somewhat surprisingly, Rawls does not say much about race or racial injustice. Is this omission problematic? Can Rawls’s theory be deployed to understand racial injustice, and can it help us in the goal of achieving a more racially just society? In this session of the PPE Author Series, we will discuss these questions with Professor Charles Mills, a distinguished scholar of social & political philosophy and philosophy of race. Our discussion will focus on several chapters of Mills’s book Black Rights/White Wrongs: The Critique of Racial Liberalism. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Asya Passinsky.

The relevant book chapters will be provided to registered students via email. Please note that the chapters presume some familiarity with Rawls’s work.
