The Morality of Markets

In this intensive one day seminar we’ll explore the moral ideals underlying socialism and capitalism, and the economic and moral consequences of socialist and market-based systems of political economy. In particular we’ll read Jerry Cohen’s defense of socialism, James Otteson’s defense of capitalism against socialism, Michael Sandel’s idea that markets corrupt our character, and Jason Brennan’s counter-argument that markets actually promote certain character virtues.

The seminar will be consist of four sessions:

  1. Cohen: Why not socialism?
  2. Otteson: The end of socialism
  3. Sandel: How markets crowd out morals
  4. Brennan: Do markets corrupt?

9:30am – 8:00pm

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.
