Beyond Policy: Human Perspectives on the Opioid Crisis

February 8, 2020 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

Free
The PPE Program and Carolina Public Humanities are hosting a workshop on February 8 looking at the opioid crisis through the lens of the humanities. We hope to bring together a unique and interdisciplinary set of voices to discuss the opioid crisis from a wide variety of perspectives.

Our workshop will feature five speakers:

  • 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM: Registration and Light Refreshments
  • 9:15 AM – 9:30 AM: Introduction
  • 9:30 AM – 10:20 AM: Alex Palmer, a National Geographic Explorer and a contributor to The New York Times Magazine, GQ, WIRED, Smithsonian, and other publications.
  • 10:20 AM – 11:10 AM: Louise Vincent, a health educator, harm reduction expert, and Executive Director at the Urban Survivor’s Union
  • 11:10 AM – 12:00 PM: William Brewer, a poet whose work directly relates to a community affected by opioid addiction
  • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch (Vimala’s Curryblossom Cafe)
  • 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM: Brian Long, a drug enforcement officer who deals directly with opioid-addiction
  • 1:50 PM – 2:40 PM: Corey Davis, Director at Harm Reduction Legal Project and Deputy Director of the Southeastern Region Network for Public Health Law
  • 2:40 PM – 4:00 PM: Q&A with All Speakers
Our goal is for everyone in attendance to come to a deeper and more holistic understanding of the opioid crisis that goes beyond public policy and examines the impact of opioids on individuals and communities that cannot be measured by statistics. This deeper understanding can help us see more clearly how best to address this crisis and move forward.
Lunch will be provided. Registration is required. You can register below:
