September 5, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The form is now closed, thank you for your interest! PPE minors will receive priority consideration, but requests are open to all students, faculty, and staff. This event includes required reading to be completed in advance.

Salon Leader:
John Bare

Description:

When the Equal Justice Initiative published research showing that Atlanta was the site of more lynchings (1877-1950) than nearly any place in the country, local leaders saw an opportunity to confront the city’s history of lynchings and convict-leasing.

In 2020, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights launched an initiative to investigate the facts and locations of violent events and correct the narratives told in newspapers, books, and film. The Center convened residents, historians, and politicians to create new memorials, mark historic locations, and appropriately commemorate the legacies of those impacted by the city’s brutal history. The initiative believes confronting the truth is necessary to the healing process. Its work builds on reparative justice efforts in South Africa, Rwanda, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
