Conference on Spatial Justice
July 18, 2019 @ 9:00 am - July 19, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
Each year, the Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) culminates in an Academic Conference where invited scholars and some of our students present their research and engage with the entire student cohort, faculty mentors, alumni, the academic community, and the general public.
This year’s theme will focus on key issues relevant to “Spatial Justice” and will be addressed from a variety of disciplines and perspectives by both local and national experts. The event features a keynote presentation by Mary Pat Brady (Cornell University), “No Borders, No Justice: Scale and the Deportation Regime”; a featured presentation by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (Duke University); a panel discussion on environmental justice by UNC-Chapel Hill Profs. Danielle Spurlock and Gabriela Valdivia, with doctoral student Diamond Holloman; a panel discussion on contested university spaces by Profs. William Sturkey (UNC-Chapel Hill), A.D. Carson (University of Virginia), and Lynn Rainville (Washington and Lee University); a panel discussion about spatial justice and its intersection with scholar activism by Profs. Elizabeth Sweet (University of Massachusetts-Boston); William “Sandy” Darity, Jr. (Duke University), and Dr. Allan Parnell (Cedar Grove Institute for Sustainable Communities); a special performance from Sonny Kelly (UNC-Chapel Hill); a sample of current MURAP student scholars’ research; and a panel with MURAP alumni.
